setting information

The Town The little town of Revelbrooke is exactly what someone might expect from a society this quaint. The locals are all quite friendly as they go about their days like always, with the same old bread and rolls and such. Theirs is a village of folk with simple needs, who live off the land and pool resources together to assure their mutual survival. Uncomplicated by technology and without the faintest idea of what "electricity" might be, it almost feels like a shame to intrude on such a peaceful society. They certainly seem welcoming enough to newcomers as they arrive trembling from their travel across dimensions. They call the new arrivals "the grace of the Gods," and insist that their arrival was pre-ordained. They'll bid newcomers to take a seat and listen to them speak of the circumstances that led to their arrival here. It's a story they love to tell.

The Faith The residents of Revelbrooke are the descendants of a long line of shamans who are blessed enough to know The Truth. Where other communities are deluded enough to believe that they have silly things like agency and free will, the devout know that there is no real order to the universe. Everything is leading to a terminal point when the Old Ones return to this land and reclaim it for their whims. Hope is an illusion, and all that exists is there by the whims of the ones who deserve worship and praise. For generations, these people have worked towards the singular goal of summoning the Old Ones back to the world they once touched.

And they're getting closer.

Five years ago, their summoning rituals began to bear fruit. Through the sheer power of their rituals and alchemy, they began to create portals to other worlds. Slowly, humanoids started to cross over. These new arrivals are considered gifts from the Old Ones, and are welcomed into the community. They are destined to be brought into the fold, it is understood, and will eventually be taught to see The Truth on their own, to use their talents and otherworldliness to make the town more powerful. They are the source of answers, surely. It's just a matter of showing them the way and treating them with kindness when they misbehave. If they even need to be disciplined, surely the Old Ones will sort that out on their own. They're always watching and have a way of making their presence known when necessary...

The Barrier The town is a self-sustained community that grows its own food, fetches its own wellwater, and raises its own livestock. It is self-sufficient enough that there's barely any dip in the quality of life, despite the tall stone wall circling around the town and the strange barrier that surrounds it. The locals say that it's the reason newcomers don't have access to the powers they claim to have once had. It's a sad state of affairs, to be so separated from the world outside, but surely something can be done to expand the Old Ones' reach. The elders consider it a work in progress.

Devotion Once monthly, the town comes together to fulfill the whims of the Old Ones. It takes an elite collection of elders to piece together the varying whispers and scraps of clues, until the announcement is held to the community at large. A masque is held in the large church in the center of town, where attendees are instructed to wear anonymous robes and one of a number of identity-concealing masks and focus entirely on channeling the will of the Old Ones. It's said that being in the room and listening to language spoken in that ancient, guttural tongue is capable of warping a person's perceptions, leaving them temporarily touched by some otherworldly force pushing their behaviors (and sometimes their bodies!) beyond their normal limitations. And though some swear that it's possible to avoid the enforcers who roam the village to ensure full attendance, it can be tricky to stay away consistently after the first time one takes part in a full Devotion.

The more one listens to that strange, slithering sort of language, the more it begins to make an odd sort of sense. Surely, it'll be intelligible if one just listens harder.

If not this month, then maybe next month. If not then, the one after will surely be enough... There's not much else that counts as entertainment around these parts, anyway.
